Sri Lanka Navy detected a medium-size LTTE logistics vessel carrying war-like materials seventy (70) Nautical Miles North-East of Mullaithivu and subsequently destroyed it during the early hours today (20th December 2008). The Navy also destroyed four enemy attack craft, which were attempting to provide protection to the enemy vessel in a separate confrontation off Mullaithivu and several LTTE boats were also badly damaged.
The Navy has stepped up surveillance in the North-Eastern seas to prevent LTTE from smuggling of war-like materials to the North-Eastern coast.

THE SRI LANKA NAVY destroyed a medium-size LTTE logistics vessel carrying a large quantity of war like materials seventy (70) Nautical Miles North-east of Mullaithivu during the early hours today (20th December 2008). The Navy in a separate confrontation OFF MULLAITTIVU also intercepted a cluster of LTTE boats and destroyed four enemy attack craft, which were attempting to support the logistics vessel.
The medium-size enemy logistics vessel was detected by the Navy Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) on a surveillance mission in the deep sea around 0130 hrs. Subsequently, the Navy patrol craft were deployed to intercept and destroy the enemy logistics vessel approximately 30 – 40 meters in length. In the ensuing naval fire lasting around 30 minutes, the enemy vessel was completely destroyed. It is believed that the enemy vessel was carrying a large quantity of war like materials to the LTTE as it sank in a ball of fire under the heavy naval fire. Four more LTTE attack craft, which were fleeing after having attempted to provide support to the enemy vessel, were also intercepted and destroyed off Mullaithivu in a separate confrontation. At least 20 Tamil rebels died when Sri Lankan Navy destroyed an LTTE vessel and four attack boats in a battle off the island's north, while two women Sea Tiger leaders were killed in an air raid, the military said on Saturday.
The Navy destroyed a medium-sized LTTE logistics vessel carrying a large quantity of war materials some 70 nautical miles north-east of Mullaithivu on Saturday morning.
It also intercepted a cluster of rebel boats and destroyed four attack craft, which were attempting to support the logistics vessel, defence officials said.
They said according to reports, about 20 Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels were killed in the naval
battle.
The rebel ship had been detected by the Navy's offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) on a surveillance mission in the deep sea in the wee hours of the day, the Navy said.
In the ensuring confrontation, which lasted for around 30 minutes, the 40-metre-long ship was completely destroyed, the Navy said adding, it is believed to have been carrying a large quantity of war materials since it burst into a ball of fire while sinking.
Meanwhile, two Sea Tiger leaders were killed in an air attack launched by the Sri Lankan Air Force MI-24 helicopter gunships targeting LTTE boat movements on Friday.
Air Force sources said two woman LTTE leaders, Suhandini and Siran, were killed in the air attack in Kilaly lagoon area.(AM-20/12)
