Dr. Sri-Skanda-Rajah was educated at Royal College Colombo, Imperial College London
and at Cambridge University where as a Vickers Scholar he obtained his PhD in
Engineering. He then worked as a consulting engineer in London, Ceylon and Malaysia
before joining the Asian Development Bank (ADB), headquartered in Manila,
Philippines, where he was responsible for formulating, appraising and implementing
development projects and technical assistance programs in the Asia-Pacific region. He
also represented the ADB on the Boards of Directors of several public and private sector
companies in the region.
In the Philippines he and his wife Usha were Directors of Virlanie Foundation, a street
children’s foundation and were awarded Rotary International’s Paul Harris Fellowship
for their community work. Since his retirement from ADB he has made Canada his home
and involved himself in business and community service.
He is the son of the late Supreme Court judge Justice Pon. Sri-Skanda-Rajah and the late
Mrs. Kanmany Sri-Skanda-Rajah. He is the son-in-law of the late Manunayagam
Coomaraswamy, Civil Engineer PWD Ceylon, who retired as Deputy Director,
Department of Buildings, and Mrs. Bavani Coomaraswamy.
Dr. Sri-Skanda-Rajah was only nineteen years old, in June 1958, when he saved the lives
of over ninety Tamils who took refuge in his home in Ratmalana, Sri Lanka, during one
of the pogroms against Tamils. He single handedly kept at bay for more than twenty four
hours a three hundred strong Sinhalese mob that had surrounded his house carrying petrol
bombs.
In April 2007 Dr. Sri-Skanda-Rajah undertook a six-day fast in Toronto to draw the
attention of Canadians and Canadian parliamentarians to the human rights violations,
crimes against humanity and war crimes perpetrated against Tamil civilians in Sri Lanka.
He and his wife Usha as human rights and freedom activists have through their prolific
writings engaged the international community in seeking a resolution to the ethnic
conflict in Sri Lanka. They have campaigned hard for a ceasefire and to find ways of
pursuing peace in the island.
If elected, Dr. Sri-Skanda-Rajah will consult widely with the Canadian Tamil community
to bring their views, concerns and recommendations to the Transnational Government of
Tamil Eelam (TGTE). He would work to strengthen unity among all sections of the
Tamil-speaking people worldwide. He would as part of the TGTE engage the
international community using diplomacy as a means to achieving Tamil Eelam. At the
same time he will also make every effort to achieving reconciliation with Sri Lanka based
on mutual respect.
Dr. Sri-Skanda-Rajah will concern himself with the urgent tasks of:
1. Alleviating the suffering of internally displaced persons and those in “internment
camps”
2. Securing the release of men and women incarcerated without charge and/or
subject to torture and rape
3. Pursuing justice for victims of human rights violations including war crimes and
crimes against humanity through a UN mandated international panel of
independent investigators
4. Restoring to rightful owners land and property occupied by the armed forces of
Sri Lanka
5. Alleviating poverty
6. Rebuilding Tamil Eelam
7. Reinforcing the three principles of Tamil Nationhood, Homeland and Selfgovernance
and enlisting the support of the international community for it, using
amongst others, lobby groups and UN mechanisms
Dr. Sri-Skanda-Rajah’s vision for Tamil Eelam is to see policies and programs adopted
towards a strong and stable economy through sustainable development paving the way
for higher living standards, high employment, sound education, and healthcare. Towards
this goal he will seek to promote and channel local and foreign investments and foreign
aid to expanding physical, social, educational and financial infrastructure, providing
credit for small businesses and extending and developing the agricultural and industrial
base backed by cutting edge science and technology.
God bless Tamil Eelam and all those who believe in it and work in concert for its
realization!
